Birth control pills side effects

Contraceptive pills are widely used for birth control , however it’s advantages as contraceptive method as it don not disturb intercourse , regulated menstrual cycle and also decrease incidence of endometerial and ovarian cancers , it has multiple side effects .

Side effects of pills are numerous as it can affect most of body systems and lead to arise of new complains as it generally can lead to nausea and vomiting due to it’s estrogen content , also it may lead to headache , irritability and depression due to it’s progesterone content , it also may lead to breast engorgement or enlargement due to both estrogen and progesterone content , it can lead also to skin pigmentation and skin acne , and lead to vaginal discharge due to vaginal congestion , which may be superimposed by monilial infection as it common type of infection in pills usurers , as pills alter carbohydrate metabolism and increase glycogen deposition , which lead to increase vaginal acidity and lead to monilial infection and vaginal discharge.

Pills and cardiovascular side effects

Pills can lead to cardiovascular complications like it can lead to thrombo-embolic disorders , due to it’s action as it lead to increase platelets adhesiveness , also increase level of coagulation factors like factor number 2 , 7, 9, 10 , and in the other side it decrease fibrinolytic activity , that lead to ischemia which may affect any different organ and lead to failure in it’s action .

pills also may lead to Ischemic heart disease especially in predisposed female , as it lead to increase LDL (low density lipoprotein) and decrease HDL (high density lipoprotein) which is mainly the progesterone action , but estrogen has opposite action , so its advised to use combined pills type.

pills and side effects on liver

pills may lead to transient elevation in liver enzymes , also it may lead to slight cholestasis , and so increase incidence of gall bladder stones.

pills and lactation

pills may decrease milk production , so during lactation , progesterone only pills are used .
