what is ectopic pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy mean that the normal fertilized ovum implanted in abnormal site outside normal uterine cavity in pregnant women.

Most of people thought that ectopic pregnancy only occur when the fertilized ovum implanted in Fallopian tubes , that is wrong , ectopic pregnancy mostly occur in fallopian tubes with about 98% and in that time it is called tubal pregnancy , but also the fertilized ovum can implanted  in about 0.2% in both  ovaries ( ovarian pregnancy ) , in cervix ( cervical pregnancy), and finally it can implanted in abdominal cavity with 1.4% of pregnant females.

Ectopic pregnancy should be suspected in any female in reproductive age comes with early onset amenorrhea , associated with abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding, with exclusion with other causes that may result also in that picture, like abortion, acute salpingitis, acute appendicitis, hemorrhage in corpus luteum cyst , cystitis, and finally complicated fibroid or ovarian cyst.

Clinical picture for variant types of ectopic pregnancy ( tubal and non tubal ) are the same with minimal difference , which cannot be discovered with simple history , and it must be proved with ultrasonography investigation .

Complication of ectopic pregnancy are very dangerous and it is mainly ruptured ectopic pregnancy and if that occur , female patient may enter to shock and finally die , so in any female presented with early onset amenorrhea, abdominal pain and bleeding she must consult her physician for exclusion of ectopic pregnancy.

Pregnancy and ectopic pregnancy

Getting pregnant after ectopic pregnancy depend on a lot of factors , first when the patient diagnosed with ectopic pregnancy as if discovered early , there may be removal of that pregnancy sac without removal of any part of female genital system , also there may be some medication used in stead of surgery as mexothrate , which leads to absorption of parts of conceptions without any affection of female genital parts, but if it discovered late or even when that patient is non stable and symptom of ruptured ectopic pregnancy are present , there will be removal of the affected part and in that time the patient will lose a part of her after coming fertility , another factor is that the first time or another time of ectopic to occur as recurrence of ectopic pregnancy of course decrease the percentage of getting pregnant , also using of contraceptive methods as intra uterine device ( IUD) increasing the percentage of ectopic pregnancy and so decrease percentage of actual uterine pregnancy , in that case you should shift to another way for contraception , also in cases of induction of ovulation , the percentage of ectopic , so if you are in induction you should serially investigate for your coming pregnancy.
